Keep Winter Haven Clean & Beautiful (KWHC&B) organizational purpose is to encourage individuals to take greater responsibility and action to enhance their community environment. By inspiring citizens to act regularly to improve the overall quality of life in their community through neighborhood and lake cleanup revitalization and beautification projects allowing for protection and preservation of natural resources.
KWHC&B’s objective is to educate individuals about litter prevention; ways to reduce, recycle, reuse, and properly manage waste materials. Through education and the media, we want to heighten awareness of the lakes and incorporate litter prevention, recycling and environmental stewardship into our activities to keep the lakes clean and beautiful. Local volunteers participate in cleanup events that remove and recycle approximately 4,000 pounds of litter annually with Project E.A.G.L.E.
Eighty percent (80%) of plastic pollution that enters the lakes originates from land. Common sources include: litter on sidewalks and streets, traffic/transportations, illegal dumping, areas with inadequate trash receptacles, and recreational users. All land-based plastic pollution has the potential to become lake pollution. Plastics easily blow into the lakes and get washed down storm drains that flow directly to the lakes.
KWHC&B’s goal is to challenge our residents to actively participate in reducing litter on our streets, in our parks and in our lakes. The emphasis is on fostering an environmental ethic, i.e. changing people’s attitude toward litter and waste reduction; altering their behavior patterns concerning litter and debris; instilling within them a continuing sense of pride of their community. The organization considers itself an educator; all our projects are educationally oriented and aimed at reducing litter and other polluting debris on a continuing basis.
Keep Winter Haven Clean & Beautiful works with a volunteer force to carry out its projects. It is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of community leaders and residents from the Winter Haven area.
